Functional Solution Architecture in Healthcare ERP Rescue Projects

Discover how strong functional architecture turned around a failing healthcare ERP project—aligning cross-system requirements, enabling client ownership, and ensuring long-term success beyond Go-Live.
2 minutes read

When a project gets stuck, the role of the functional architect becomes critical. In our healthcare D365 project, much of the architecture work was either incomplete or undocumented. The original design tried to mirror AX, but didn’t fit the realities of cloud ERP—or the complexity of the healthcare space.

Where We Started

  • Requirements were vague and scattered across versions
  • Testing failed due to misaligned configurations
  • Multiple systems (Salesforce, AX, Mulesoft) lacked defined integration roles
  • No client-side ownership of data structure or security

1. Rebuild the Requirement Backbone

We centralized and reviewed every requirement. Each was assigned a status and tied to ADO. We traced configurations, validations, and test scripts back to these requirements, eliminating ambiguity.

2. Design with Cross-System Awareness

We formalized the architecture to support parallel testing environments for Salesforce and D365. We introduced a temporary layer to support transition without breaking existing workflows.

3. Align with Success by Design

We added blueprint reviews, deployment checkpoints, and a licensing revalidation. These weren’t just boxes to check—they were moments to pause, confirm, and align with the project’s true goals.

4. Build for Ownership, Not Just Go-Live

We enabled the client’s team to manage security roles, understand Power BI structures, and own the reporting framework. Every sign-off became a handoff.

Key Takeaway

In healthcare rescue work, functional architects aren’t just solution designers—they’re trust rebuilders. When the architecture reflects clarity, adaptability, and ownership, the system works long after go-live.
